In Spring 2023, Sociologist Rene Almeling (Yale), bioethicist Lisa Campo-Engelstein (UTMB), and physician-scientist Brian T. Nguyen (USC) organized a focused convening of scholars, scientists, and clinicians who are rethinking and reframing male sexual and reproductive health in the United States. Our goal was to bring together a range of perspectives on questions at the nexus of sperm/health/politics, including those of social scientists, physicians, and others working on topics such as male infertility, male contraception, "paternal effects" on reproductive outcomes, and reproductive and sexual healthcare. Recognizing the significance of language in these realms (and the extent to which it remains fraught, imprecise, and in flux), we emphasize our interest in the reproductive and sexual health of people of all gender identities, and in particular how it is shaped by intersecting social processes and inequalities around sex, gender, race, class, and/or sexuality. We are currently working to publish the proceedings from the convening. Please feel free to email rene.almeling@yale.edu with any questions.
